About this quilt
The memorial around you tells the story of this ground. The quilt in front of you is the community's acknowledgement: a brick wall built the other way around. Every brick on it was made by hand, freely, by someone who chose to sit down and make one. Most signed their name. A few chose not to, and that was theirs to decide as well.
A wall can be built a second time by the people it belongs to, and this time every hand that laid a brick chose to.
The quilt pattern is a true running bond wall rather than a decorative approximation of one. Each finished brick measures six inches by three inches, set with a one-and-a-half-inch sashing that reads as mortar, and every other row is offset by a half brick, exactly as a bricklayer would set them.
The map on this site is drawn to that same scale, so a brick you find on screen sits exactly where it sits on the wall in front of you. If you are looking for one in particular, whether it is yours or made by someone you know, the map will show you where to look.
